Design Philosophy

The L200 was essentially a domesticated version of JBL's professional studio monitors. The use of a compression driver and horn for high frequencies provided exceptional dynamics and efficiency that conventional dome tweeters couldn't match. This design philosophy prioritized accurate transient response and low distortion over the extended high-frequency response of later dome designs.

Historical Context

The L200 represented the pinnacle of JBL's home speakers in the mid-1970s. Its professional pedigree made it popular among recording engineers and serious audiophiles who wanted studio-grade accuracy in their listening rooms. The system required careful placement and a powerful amplifier to perform at its best, but rewarded with effortless dynamics and authoritative bass extension.

The L200 was succeeded by the L300 Summit and the L200B as an updated variant.
