Cabinet Design
The Model 19 featured a substantial bass-reflex enclosure with a front-firing port. Unlike the Voice of the Theatre A7 with its combination horn/vented design, the Model 19 was a more conventional bass-reflex system optimized for home listening rooms. The cabinet was constructed of high-quality plywood with internal bracing and acoustic damping.
Early versions featured oiled walnut veneer, while later production used vinyl woodgrain finishes. The front baffle was covered with removable acoustic fabric grille cloth.
Woofer Evolution
The Model 19 saw a change in woofer during its production run:
- Early (1977-1979): 416-8B with orange/red surround
- Late (1979+): 416-8Z with updated surround and slightly different parameters
Both versions are highly regarded, with some collectors preferring the earlier 416-8B for its slightly different voicing.
Performance Characteristics
The Model 19 is known for:
- Exceptional Dynamics: 100 dB sensitivity allows for lifelike dynamics even with low-powered amplifiers
- Natural Midrange: The horn-loaded compression driver provides clarity without harshness
- Deep, Controlled Bass: The 416 woofer in the tuned enclosure reaches into the 30s Hz
- Wide Soundstage: The 811B horn provides excellent dispersion
Amplifier Pairing
With 100 dB sensitivity, the Model 19 works beautifully with:
- Low-powered tube amplifiers (5-20 watts)
- Classic solid-state receivers
- Modern high-efficiency amplifiers
The high impedance and sensitivity make the Model 19 an ideal partner for single-ended triode (SET) amplifiers.
Legacy
The Model 19 is often described by owners as a "keeper" - a speaker that satisfies so completely that upgrading becomes unnecessary. Many who have sold their Nineteens later regretted the decision. The combination of professional-grade drivers, quality cabinet construction, and timeless Altec voicing has made it a permanent classic.
In recent years, restored Model 19s command premium prices on the vintage market, with well-maintained examples often selling for more than their original retail price (adjusted for inflation).
