Design Overview
The Model 14 used a classic 3-way arrangement to divide the frequency spectrum across three specialized drivers. This design offered several advantages over 2-way systems:
- Dedicated midrange for clearer vocals and instruments
- Lower crossover point to the woofer for less directional bass
- Higher crossover to the tweeter for better dispersion
Comparison to Model 19
While both used 15" woofers, they offered different approaches:
| Feature | Model 14 | Model 19 |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | 3-way | 2-way |
| Midrange | Dedicated driver | Woofer handles mids |
| Bass Extension | 30 Hz | 35 Hz |
| Sensitivity | 98 dB | 100 dB |
Legacy
The Model 14 represented Altec's commitment to providing options for different listening preferences. While the Model 19 became the more famous design, the Model 14 found favor with listeners who preferred a 3-way system's presentation. Today, restored Model 14s are valued by collectors who appreciate their full-range capabilities.
